Speaking and Listening
We believe that all our children can, and should, be able to listen attentively and speak confidently and articulately in a range of situations. In order to facilitate this, we encourage children at school to speak in sentences of various types and for a variety of purposes, both formal and informal. There are many different opportunities for the children to listen: visiting speakers and shows, class discussions, Talk Partners, collective worship and many more.
Speaking and Listening are the foundations for Writing; if a child can speak in interesting and informative sentences, they will write them too. This leads to academic success. We therefore follow the Talk4Writing model of teaching, where we encourage the children to say their sentence, and then write it down, checking for impact. How Can I Help At Home?
At home, please encourage your child to:
1. Plan what they are going to say, then speak.
2. Start sentences in different ways e.g.
- When I saw…,
- If…
- In my opinion…
- While they were...
- Luckily…
- However…
3. Listen carefully and talk about what they have heard in situations such as listening to a story, watching T.V. or conversation at a family meal.
4. Give a message or order something in a café or shop.
5. Play games where they have to take turns.
6. Role-play phoning emergency services or their acceptance of an Award!
We are sure that you can think of many more opportunities.
