Year 1
Year 1 presents lots of exciting, new opportunities and topics! We learn about The Land of Snow and Ice, Space, Once Upon a Time and lots more. During our Under the Sea topic in the Summer term, we have the opportunity to go on a trip to Bristol Aquarium. To support our Geography topic of The Local Area we go on a trip to our local village in Weston. We learn what features are around us and determine whether we live in an urban or a rural area.
This year we are taking part in ‘An Evening of Dance’ where we have worked hard to perform a dance to Singing in the Rain. Year 1 are very excited to be performing this to an audience at the Bath Forum. We also take part in the KS1 Nativity, where we get creative and learn songs, dances and actions to support the show.
In Year 1, we follow the Little Wandle Programme, where the children continue to learn decoding, prosody and comprehension. It is a pleasure to see them develop their skills using the Little Wandle reading books that the school has recently purchased. The new books are fantastic and offer lots of great reading material, both fiction and non-fiction, as the children are carefully matched to the correct books through assessment. In Year 1, it’s lovely to see them becoming such independent readers! Alongside this, Year 1 have the opportunity to share these skills with a reading partner from Year 5.
